How to Throw a Frisbee Backhand

1. Grip:

  • Start with a comfortable grip on the Frisbee. Use a power grip, where you place your thumb on top of the Frisbee and your fingers underneath. Your index and middle fingers should be along the inside rim, and your thumb on the outside.

2. Stance:

  • Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and your weight balanced on the balls of your feet. Your non-throwing shoulder should be pointing toward your target.

3. Wind Up:

  • Hold the Frisbee close to your body with your elbow bent at a 90-degree angle. Rotate your hips and shoulders away from your target as you wind up. This helps generate torque for the throw. The wind up is one of the most important parts for getting a lot of power int your throws.

4. Step:

  • Take a step with your front foot in the direction of your target, transferring your weight from your back foot to your front foot. This step initiates the power for the throw. When needed you can adjust the positioning of your foot so that you can get around the defender, but this might affect how much power and accuracy you get. Test a lot of different way to do this until you find a way that works well for you.

5. Release:

  • As you transfer your weight, rotate your hips and shoulders back towards your target. Simultaneously, extend your arm, releasing the Frisbee with a flicking motion of your wrist and fingers. The release point is crucial for accuracy.

6. Follow Through:

  • After releasing the Frisbee, follow through with your throwing arm. Your arm should finish extended and pointing in the direction of your target. Your weight should be shifted onto your front foot.

7. Spin:

  • To add spin to the Frisbee, snap your wrist at the point of release. This spin stabilizes the flight and makes the Frisbee more predictable, and makes it so that it can fly better in the wind.

8. Practice:

  • Practice is key to improving your backhand throw. Work on your grip, stance, wind up, and release regularly. Experiment with different release angles to find what works best for you.

9. Troubleshooting:

  • If the Frisbee consistently curves to one side, adjust your grip or release angle. If it wobbles in the air, focus on a smooth, controlled release with lots of spin.

10. Game Application:

  • In a game situation, be mindful of your surroundings and the defense. Use your peripheral vision to spot open teammates and adjust the power and angle of your throw accordingly. Make sure that you keep one foot planted so that the defender can’t call a travel on you.

11. Build Strength and Endurance:

  • Strengthening your core, shoulders, and legs can improve your throwing power and endurance. Include exercises like planks, shoulder presses, and squats in your training routine.
